Drapery & Wallpaper are back!

Well, the truth is, they never actually went away but they may have not been as trendy for different periods of time. As far as drapery goes, the styles from the 90’s were adorned with swags, fringe, and a heavy look so it makes since that after awhile and as homes recycle, it was time to retire the heavy. Moving into the 2000’s, the minimalist and farmhouse/natural style, everything is lightening up and becoming more simple or light & airy. Who else gets excited when a trend fades out to see what comes next? Just me?

Wallpaper also changed it’s style from traditional prints to grasscloths, faux brick and wood styles, geometric and large prints and bright colors. Wallpaper tends to drift in & out at times because of the process of hanging it and stripping it. We’ve all been there right? I say, don’t let that stop you from enjoying a paper you fall in love with…just save a little extra and hire a professional. I promise the fee is worth the aggravation!

Drapery trends rights now are definitely still very simple, natural, airy and mostly linen blends; think Pottery Barn or Joanna Gains. Most of what I install these days are linens or similar textures, in natural, ivory, white, maybe a light blue or gray & alot of sheer or sheer like linen fabrics, with simple 2 finger pleats and small metal rods. Most don’t even want the finials on the hardware anymore. The French Return rod or just decorative end caps serve the purpose and save a little money. Occasionaly, I’ll have a client interested in a print for a roman shade, or ask for a trim to be added to the leading edge of the drapery panel but the look is stil very natural and minimal.

If you are interested in exploring a drapery look for your home, start by exploring Pinterest or Houzz, and save pictures of looks that you love. Send your pictures to us with an idea of the colors and windows/doors in your space and we can source fabrics we think you’ll love! Once we have memo’s(samples) for you to view, we’ll come to your home, measure the windows and let you know the details to create your look.

Keep in mind, custom drapery is a bit of an investment. Fabric is purchased from a mill, and sourced all over the world! Once purchased it is sent to a workroom where the fabric is cut and sewn to the sizes specified with whatever trim details, lining, etc necessary and shipped to your designer. The hardware that your drapery will hang from has to also be measured for, cut, shipped and installed. Cllients often ask about ordering their own material or hardware online, and my answer is : if you want a ready made look, that is fine. If you want your drapery to look like the magazines, have a nice fullness, tailored pleat and just kiss the floor & installed on a rod that glides easy….I would hire a designer and order custom drapery. There really is no comparison.
