What type of motorized shade do I need?
Motorized shade manufactureres are continuing to innovate and bring the ultimate technology to window shades allowing you to connect with home automation systems and smart home devices such as Alexa, Google Home, Control 4 & more. This technology does come with an investment, but there are options to keep the cost to a minimum.
Rechargeable Shades…these shades bring the cost down allowing a consumer to use a USB charging cord to charge their shades. In some cases, this option is 1/2 the cost of a hardwired motorization option.
Powerwands…this option is fairly new and not available with every shade style or manufacturer. The shade does have a rechargeable motor but instead of using of searching for the remote, the control buttons are on the wand attached to the shade. The wands are minimal in size and design, and come at a less expensive price point. The idea is to offer an automation that is easier than using cords or even cordless…just push a button and walk away.
Hard Wire- This is a great option if you are early in the building process and can pre-wire for it. This does come with more of an up front cost than the other options, but you save time and money over the long run because you do not have to change batteries or ever charge the shades!! NOTE: IF YOU WANT AN INSIDE MOUNT FLUSH INSTALLATION YOU NEED A MINIMUM 4.5” DEEP WINDOWS.
Satellite Battery Packs…this is a great option if hard wire is not available but you have windows that are high above a front door, foyer or in a second story that is unreachable. The satellite battery pack can be mounted someplace near the window at a much lower location, perhaps under a sill, behind drapery, where it is easier to access to change the batteries. The cord can be mounted against moldings or in a chase to be less noticeable.
Home Automation & Smart Home Integrations-If this is something you know you want to do, first decide which type of home automation system you want to use. Next, check with your window coverings provider to understand what is needed to integrate. Sometimes, an additional piece of equipment is needed and most often, the AV company and the Shade Company need to meet to ensure all wiring and connections are done in such a way that all the equipment communicates properly.
